By Editor Becky Watts

GRIFFIN - On Sunday, June 12, 2022, Pike County Times received a tip that there had been a shooting in the parking lot of the 19-41 Ingles in Griffin. Upon arrival at the scene, Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix advised that there has been a non-officer involved shooting (a suicide) in the parking lot out by the gas pumps at the 19-41 Ingles in Griffin.

Pike County Times was advised that a statement would be given to the media when the investigation was complete. PLEASE NOTE: Scroll to the bottom of the article for updates in time order.

Update From The GRIP 6.12.22

Sheila Mathews from The GRIP received an email from Sheriff Dix around 11 p.m. last night that told at least part of the story and attempted to quell the ongoing speculation of community members who were making up and/or passing along information that simply wasn’t true.

From The GRIP, “According to Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix, the man, who has not yet been publicly identified, himself chose Ingles as the location to meet law enforcement authorities for a peaceful surrender.” The GRIP’s article can be read by clicking here.

Update From Sheriff Kilgore on 6.13.22

Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore released the following statement prior to the 8 a.m. hour on 6.13.22 which states as follows:

“On Wednesday June 8 Stanley Steverson of Thomaston was reported as a missing person to the Thomaston Police Department. His truck was located in northern Upson County on the same day and impounded by Upson County Deputies. We conducted a joint investigation with assistance from Thomaston PD and GBI revealing evidence that Mr. Steverson had been the victim of a homicide occurring on Rose Hill Drive in Upson County.

We determined that Demonte Terrell Davis was involved in the death of Mr. Steverson. A warrant was obtained charging Davis with Murder. Davis has been at large since committing the crime.

We established telephone contact with Davis on June 12 and he was to surrender to law enforcement at the Ingles grocery store in Griffin. We coordinated efforts with Thomaston PD and Spalding County SO to safely effect his surrender.

Davis was escorted to Ingles by family members and exited a vehicle at approximately 4:50 pm. He placed a handgun to his head firing one self inflicted gunshot. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling this stage of the investigation. No officers fired their weapons or were injured in this incident.

Mr. Steverson’s body has not been recovered.

A second individual, Amber Smith Davis, wife of Terrell Davis is charged with concealing a Death and is incarcerated in the Upson County Jail.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Upson County Sheriffs Office at 706-646-7903.”

Update From Sheriff Kilgore on 6.13.22

Sheriff Dan Kilgore sent out a media update around 7:20 p.m. on 6.13.22. It read as follows:

"The remains of Stanley Steverson were recovered in Southern Upson County off of Pleasant Grove Road on Monday June 13. The remains were located deep in the woods in a small creek with an extremely steep bank.

The recovery was difficult due to the terrain and required the use of an excavator to gain access. The agencies involved in the recovery were Upson County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Upson Rescue Department and the Upson County Water Department. I wish to thank all who assisted with today’s recovery.

Mr. Steverson’s body has been sent to the GBI Crime lab for further investigation.

A second person, Christopher Lamar Green, 36, of Jackson Avenue in Thomaston has been arrested on charges of concealing a Death. He is held in the Upson County Jail.
