ZEBULON - Dr. Michael Duncan, School Superintendent, announced his retirement from the Pike County School system through an email on May 30, 2023. He has been the school superintendent for the past 18 years.

“You allowed me to have a career that has been filled with purpose and joy. Your commitment, selflessness, and love are evident every day, and I feel so lucky to have been on this journey with you. Pike County is a special place, with special people, on a special journey.”

He said that there is never an ideal time to leave, but that leadership is a relay, and it is his time to pass the baton. He also said that it was a blessing to be able to do so while “we are winning the race” citing that the school district is performing well academically as well as financially.

He did not say what his next "great adventure" would be in the email but said that he would share it in the next week or so.

“It has been an honor to serve as your superintendent,” he said. “The best days for Pirate Nation lie ahead.”

Pike County Times will share more information about his final day and the hiring process as that information becomes available.
