Collection for Storm Victims Arrives in North Carolina

ZEBULON - World Baptist Missions, Inc. (WBM) has been collecting items for victims of Hurricane Helene for the past couple of months with the help of the Pike, Upson, and Lamar County Sheriff's Offices, First Baptist of Zebulon, and United Bank. Organizer Sandy Cheves contacted Pike County Times to advise that the delivery of these items was made to storm victims in Weaverville, North Carolina right before Christmas.

This is a location not far from Asheville. He said that they were absolutely thrilled to get it! The container has been left at the location for about 6 weeks or so in order to enable the organization and distribution of the items that were donated from around this area.

Cheves worked with Samaritan’s Purse to find a location that could use the items donated from this area. Tom Crowley and his son, Vince, did a quick, turn-around trip to Weaverville to drop off the container for the community there.

Leaving the Container for Now

Eddie Bussard is in charge of getting the donations to those who need it in the Weaverville, North Carolina community. Those in need have included a halfway house for children that was very happy to receive diapers, blankets, and water from the container. Residents from the community have been coming forward to accept donations as well.

Cheves said that there is a possibility of refilling the container when it comes back to Georgia. Warm clothes, easy to cook foods, and maybe even building materials will be next on the list.

World Baptist Missions Inc. has a primary mission in Guaimaca, Honduras at a seminary, hospital, and senior assisted living center there. WBM Inc. has been an active ministry for 38 years and has been in Honduras since 1998. It is a 501(c)3 organization.

“We have an excellent reputation with Samaritan’s Purse, who was generous with equipment and supplies when we were building a hospital in Honduras,” said Cheves.

More About World Baptist Missions, Inc.

Al Van Lengen also spoke with Pike County Times about this ministry. He is retired a Army Veteran and recently retired as an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector and will be stepping in to lead World Baptist Missions, Inc. in Cheves' place as well as going to Honduras during trips that are scheduled over the next couple of months.

A group from Iowa will be going to Honduras on a missions trip in February. They’ve been providing needed help there for 18 years. Another group from Zebulon will be going in June.

The team from Iowa, arriving in February, will set up small mobile clinics in several of the most remote areas around Guiamaca. They will be providing immediate healthcare services to those who normally are unable to receive health care. They have in the past provided support in building facilities and other support to senior citizens.

The Team from Zebulon, arriving in June, will be assisting in building a senior assisted living center that WBM Inc. has been working on. They will also be assisting in feeding, medical support to senior citizens along with evangelism.

All Teams assist with ongoing evangelism, construction, feeding, teaching, and medical ministries. WBM reaches the lost by meeting essential physical needs with kindness and compassion integrated with witnessing, teaching, and ongoing support of new and seasoned Christians in the community in which they live. WBM is a ministry based on personal relationships, respect, and Christ-like love.

Al said that there will be a trip in April for pastoral training. A group goes down 3 to 4 times per year to provide seminary style teaching with Biblical studies for leaders there. Al and his team will be providing pastoral training on the book of 1st Peter, and his wife Katherine will be teaching Women’s Bible Study while they are there.
