Celebrating Junior Beta Club at Pike County Middle School
By Guest Columnist Johnnie Ann Gaskill

ZEBULON - Seventy new members were inducted into the Junior Beta Club on May 16th at Pike County Middle School. Jake Maddox, president, called the meeting to order. Mrs. Dawn Lanca, one of the two sponsors of the club, welcomed students and guests to the ceremony. Abigail Chasteen read “Climb Till Your Dreams Come True,” a poem by Helen Steiner Rice. Zoe Maher read an original writing entitled “The Heart of Beta.” Mara McGurl, a Beta Club member at Pike County High School, addressed the new inductees.

Each Beta Club officer, in turn, lit a colored candle before speaking briefly to those in attendance. Hannah Nauck lit a yellow candle on behalf of all the members of the club. Officers are: President: Jake Maddox, Vice-President: Caylee Daniel, Secretary: Danielle Henderson, and Treasurer: Antonio Britain.

Anna Rich led the members in reciting the official Junior Beta Pledge: “I hereby declare that I shall always strive to be honest and truthful at all times; to maintain a creditable scholastic record; to be of service to my teachers and fellowmen; to conduct myself in an ethical and moral manner to reflect credit upon my school and community.”

Then, as Mrs. Dawn Lanca read out the names of the new inductees, each came forward to receive a certificate of membership from President Jake Maddox and Secretary Danielle Henderson. Afterward, Georgia Hanson sang “That’s Life.”

To conclude the program, Dr. Vickie Smith thanked everyone for coming and invited all new Beta members and guests to a reception in the Commons Area.
