Section of Road Closed Until Further Notice

Public Works Director Todd Goolsby advised by phone yesterday afternoon that Old Lifsey Springs Road is closed between Deer Trail and Millwood Road. The pictures above show a side of the road that is crumbling and would be very dangerous to any vehicle that encountered this hole.

Director Goolsby advised that there are two eight foot pipes spanning eighty feet beneath the roadway. He said that the bottom of these pipes has deteriorated over the years and the water started washing out beneath them to undermine the road. Someone called 911 yesterday and Public Works closed this section of the road off as well as placing signs around the area to warn motorists of the danger and to take alternate routes.

Director Goolsby said that this is a heavily traveled road in Pike County and that the Georgia Department of Transportation has had money available for emergency situations like this in the past. Pike County encountered a similar situation several years ago on the same road and the Georgia DOT provided funding for the materials in order to get that section of the road back open again.

"We will try to get funding for it and get it opened up as soon as possible," said Director Goolsby.
