ZEBULON - The City of Zebulon is working with Conexon Connect and Southern Rivers Energy (SRE) to expand fiber broadband throughout the city limits as it continues to face a continued lack of access to high-speed internet in and around downtown.
Following a feasibility study that validated the need for and community interest in high-speed internet options in the unserved area, both SRE and Conexon Connect agreed to launch the project as part of their commitment to bridge the digital divide in rural communities.
“We approached Conexon Connect and SRE asking for their help to extend fiber availability into the city, not only for our downtown businesses and emergency agencies who require reliable, high-speed internet to function, but also for our residents who are just outside of Southern Rivers’ territory,” said Zebulon Mayor Joe Walter.
The City of Zebulon will be responsible for securing right-of-way easements and necessary permits for underground construction. Depending on how quickly the required documents can be obtained, the Conexon team hopes to begin construction by the end of the year.
“It is very early in the process so we do not have a lot of details to share at this time other than address collection for the area to be served has been completed and the Conexon team will begin working on the design maps within the next few weeks,” said SRE’s Manager of Member Services and External Affairs Erin Cook.
The expansion of the Connect, powered by Southern Rivers Energy, network will provide access to multi-gigabit-speed internet to approximately 440 homes and businesses inside Zebulon. Information on an estimated timeline, service availability dates and sign-up capabilities will be provided as the project progresses. Service packages start at 100 Mbps for $49.95/month for residential and $79.95 for businesses. For more information on pricing and add-on services like streaming DIRECTV, visit conexonconnect.com.
