MEANSVILLE - Late Sunday afternoon a deputy with the Pike County Sheriff's Office alerted fire personnel about a pregnant cow stuck in a ditch in a pasture on Highway 19. Pike County Fire Department (PCFD) personnel responded to a pasture on the property in Meansville around 5 p.m.
The owner of the cow was on site and stated the cow, Star, had been in the ditch an underdetermined amount of time. She was not present at feeding time when her owner did the head count and efforts to locate her found her in the ditch.
Through the concerted efforts of PCFD personnel Chief O’Barr, Chief Neath, Lt. Wilkerson, Lt. Slone, FF Harris, PIO Neath, Todd Goolsby of Pike County Public Works, and the owner and family members, Star was safely removed from the ditch/sinkhole three hours later.
PIO Neath said that she spoke with the owner this afternoon via text and the owner said that other than being muddy, Star doesn’t seem to show any ill effects from her ordeal. Precautions are being taken to secure the area to prevent any future incidents.
Thank you to county volunteers and personnel for your efforts to help people in our community!
