“For Fun Spring Fling” Dog Show Set for April 14th
By Guest Columnist Claudia Gallion

BARNESVILLE - Is your dog a canine American Idol wannabe? Is he just the best and most beautiful dog in the world, if only in your eyes? Does she enjoy showing off her newest outfit to her friends? If so, come on out to the fifth annual Dolly Goodpuppy Society “Just for Fun Spring Fling” dog show. It may not be Westminster or Crufts, but it's ten times the fun!

This year's show will be held Saturday, April 14th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Barnesville Civic Center, behind the pool. A $10 per dog admission fee includes entry into all competitive dog events, including most talented, tallest, shortest, longest ears, best dressed (a costume event), most mysterious heritage (winner receives DNA testing), owner/dog look-alike, oddest couple, musical chairs, and “dog of the day.” For an additional $1 per ticket, people can play too, vying for scrumptious homemade cakes. Entry is free for attendees not entering the competition. Hot dogs, chips, cold drinks, and fresh-popped popcorn will be available for purchase. Some of Dolly's pups, available for adoption, will attend the event for a special meet and greet.

All proceeds from the show will benefit the Dolly Goodpuppy Society, a 501(3)(c) nonprofiit organization, to support its rescue and humane education efforts. DGS has been a Department of Agriculture Licensed Rescue since July 1, 2009. In 2011, DGS achieved a total of 75 adoptions of homeless dogs. During that year, DGS had 138 intakes to its kennel and 51 transports of dogs to other in-state and out-of-state rescue facilities, as well as several adoptions from courtesy postings on the DGS website. As a part of its adoption efforts, the organization employs proven socialization methods prior to making puppies and dogs available for adoption to help ensure that they will be valued, lifelong companions. DGS also held three 2011 clinics, where 180 dogs and cats received low-cost spay and neuter services. In the January 2012 clinic, 52 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered, and 60 are booked for the April 2012 clinic. The organization encourages all pet owners to spay or neuter to reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs, thousands of which are euthanized every year in Georgia.
