Guns Found in Pike County Primary School Student's Backpack

ZEBULON - Sheriff Jimmy Thomas makes the following statement at 11:52 a.m.:

Pike County Sheriff's Office School Resource Deputies and Investigators are currently at the Primary School in reference to two guns being located in a student's backpack. The guns were not loaded when they were found in the backpack. The firearms have been taken into custody by investigators and interviews are being conducted in order to determine how the child obtained them.

School personnel located the guns in a first grader's backpack as they were helping the child prepare for class. A school resource deputy was immediately notified and responded to handle the situation.

At this time no students are in danger and school activities are proceeding as normal.

Update: Sheriff's Office School Resource Deputies have arrested Jamie Hawsey, 26 years of age, in regards to the incident during which two guns were found in a first graders backpack today. Ms. Hawsey is being charged with reckless conduct for allowing her child to access the guns while unsupervised.

Ms. Hawsey moved to Pike County last week from Alabama and this was the first day that her child was enrolled in the school system.
