History Remembered in the Hilltop Community
By Editor Becky Watts

CONCORD - Saturday, September 12, 2026, was a day of celebration in the Hilltop Community in Concord. It was the annual Hilltop Reunion Day, and it was a dedication of the Hilltop Neighborhood and Community with a historical plaque recognizing the spirit of community, friendship, and cooperation that makes Hilltop neighborhood and community a special place to live.

The Hilltop Neighborhood and Community is believed to have been inhabited in the early 1900s with early residents including the Askews, Griffins, Harris, Hixon, Kings, McClendons, Shermans, Slades, Tylers, and Williams.

The Concord industrial School served the community in the 1930s. Early records reflect a building date of 1946. In the 1950s plans were made for a new school, and the Pike County Consolidated High School was completed in 1955.

The Hilltop Neighborhood and Community was formally recognized as the Hilltop Subdivision / Community in 1955 when Lots were purchased by individuals from the R.F. Strickland Company and the Union Society Company.

It is believed that the first church to serve the hilltop neighborhood and Community was the pure Holiness Church built in 1963. The Hilltop Panther baseball team was formed in the 1960s.

It is believed that two of the first businesses to serve the community included the Willie Harris grocery store established in 1960 and the Owens Sandwich Shop established in the late 1970s.

The Hilltop Concerned Citizens was organized in 1993, and the reuniting Hilltop committee was formed by 45 men and 2015 in order to celebrate Hilltop Reunion Day which is held every second week in September.

The permanent plaque will be placed on location at a later date.
