ZEBULON - Family, friends, and teammates surrounded PCHS senior DeAndre Holmes recently as he signed a basketball scholarship with Waycross College located in Waycross, GA. DeAndre will trade in his Pirates uniform for one with the Waycross Swamp Foxes under Coach Cory Baldwin, a Jonesboro, GA native. Waycross is a Division I Junior College and while a fairly new program at three years old, they have experienced success with a Conference Championship and a trip to the National Junior College Tournament in 2011.
Holmes’ high school basketball coach, Mark Andrews remarked, “DeAndre‘s strong work ethic and intense desire to do the right thing put him in a position to attend college and play basketball at the collegiate level.” Sharing some of his reasons for recruiting DeAndre Coach Baldwin said, “Dre is perfect to our style of play. He is a great scorer, a solid student and an even better kid. We are excited to get him down here at Waycross.”
Holmes has a 3.27 GPA, is an honor roll student, and is eligible for the Hope Scholarship. As a Pirate, DeAndre, known as Dre by his teammates, was a top performer. Dre led the Pirates in scoring both his Junior and Senior years. He was awarded the Team Captain and Pirate Awards at the end of the season, as well as being selected one of the members of the 2AA All-Region team. An outstanding all-around athlete, Dre was also chosen for the 2AA All-Region teams in football and baseball.
“This isn’t the last time we’ll be able to see Dre on a basketball court. Waycross College will face Gordon College, Atlanta Metro and Georgia Perimeter on this year’s schedule. We will have several opportunities to see him play college ball and continue to watch him grow on and off the court”, said Coach Andrews.
