Families Feeding Families Homeless Ministry Works to Help Others

THOMASTON - Deuteronomy 15:7 “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother…”

Families Feeding Families Homeless Ministry of Middle Georgia is a 501c3 non-profit organization located out of Thomaston. It collects food, clothing, shoes, coats, blankets, sleeping bags, pillow cases, water, and personal hygiene items and gives to those who are in need in the community and throughout Georgia. Families Feeding Families Homeless Ministry began in July of 2013.

Director Tim Gordy got started in the homeless ministry when he watched a video documentary filmed by Daniel Ishee of Eternal Impact, Inc. on the streets of Atlanta. Not long after seeing the video, Tim saw Daniel at a prayer meeting and told him about the video’s impact on his life.

“I watched this video and it touched my heart,” Tim told Daniel. He asked to go along on an outreach for the homeless with Eternal Impact, Inc. Daniel told him that there was an outreach that very evening and invited Tim to go along. That night after the prayer meeting at Mountain View Church in Thomaston, Daniel, Tim and a few others went to deliver clothes, food, and other items to some of the homeless in Atlanta.

“When we arrived in Atlanta, I stepped out onto that sidewalk, it was a whole, total new world,” Tim said. He said that the first stop was outside of a church when some homeless people were preparing to bed down for the night. “As I got to talking to these people, I realized that these people are just like you and I but down on their luck.”

He said that the group prayed with them and gave them clothes, blankets, socks, and food. Daniel had brought his guitar so they also sang with them before moving on to another place. “I never knew there were so many homeless on the streets of Atlanta.” He went on to say that the night had changed him and he knew that he wanted to help with this ministry.

After a time, Daniel told Tim that he was moving back to Florida. When Tim asked what would happen to his ministry, Daniel told Tim that Tim could take care of it from here on out. And that is exactly what he did. But the story doesn’t end there.

Eternal Impact, Inc. was approached by Families Feeding Families of Middle Georgia’s Director and asked to come aboard with this ministry for the homeless. After thinking it over and much prayer, Tim came up with a new name for this homeless ministry--Families Feeding Families Homeless Ministry, and began to work under the umbrella of the Family Feeding Families of Middle Georgia Ministry.

Families Feeding Families Homeless Ministry collects men’s and women’s clothing, socks, shoes, underclothes, coats, hoodies, sweat shirts, personal hygiene items, Bibles, and non-perishable food items. We help people here in the community and other communities in the area too, Tim said. There have been several fundraisers with the help of Thomaston Ford and Zaxby’s out of Thomaston that will help fund future trips.

Tim advised that Families Feeding Families Homeless Ministry is planning to do a trip to Atlanta soon. “Santa will be going handing out presents,” he said. “If anyone would like to go let us know.” He also said that the ministry went to Griffin and fed the homeless there at the shelter at Thanksgiving.

People from all walks of life and even youth groups have stepped up to become a part of this ministry. There have been many trips to Atlanta and an opportunity to feed the homeless in Columbus as well. There are plans to go to Macon soon and maybe even Savannah.
