ZEBULON - Rufus Clemmons, Director of the Boys and Girls Club of West Georgia, Pike Unit, made a presentation to Friendship Presbyterian Church Wednesday night with three Keystone Club students who attended the 2012 National Conference in Dallas. This year’s theme was “Think Big”.
The Pike Unit was one of only two Clubs in the entire state of Georgia to attend this Conference on the weekend of April 23rd. Only Clubs who have achieved the Silver and Gold Levels are eligible to attend. Clubs achieve this coveted level by volunteer work, mentoring younger children, and participating in such events as Relay for Life.
A slide show was the background for all four attendees to speak on their activities in Dallas. There were discussions on the wide variety of motivational speakers who reinforced their work here at home. There were opportunities to meet a few of the 2,000 other Keystone members from all over the world and share cultures.
There was discussion of the excitement of being airborne for the first time. All agreed the highlight of the trip was a behind the scenes visit to the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
In addition to Director Clemmons, local President Martis Ferguson attended the Conference. One of the President’s roles is to make plans for the annual conference. Martis Ferguson is enjoying his senior year at Pike County and has set his sights on studying biology at North Georgia College and State University, Dahlonega.
Amari Ferguson, sophomore, will be attending Clark Atlanta and is considering the field of social work. Amari will be next year’s Keystone President.
Ortearia Hamm, freshman, is interested in pursuing a profession in the medical field. This young lady is a Candy Striper at Griffin Spalding Hospital.
Many fundraisers were involved in the financing of this trip and all young people worked hard to secure the funds necessary for expenses. We wish all of them success and are proud of them as they set goals and work towards their dreams.
