ZEBULON - Once a year, the Pike County American Legion Post 197 gathers to show appreciation for those who have supported our community and our American Legion. The Award Ceremony and Officer Installation was held on July 14, 2016.
Members honored for their continuous years as members of the American Legion included James Lawrence - 23 years, Robert Atchison - 23 years, William Huckaby - 22 years, Douglas Jones - 17 years, Ronald Bartlett - 17 years, William Hamrick - 16 years, Charles Dayhuff III - 20 years and David Bugh - 15 years.
Post 197 Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Zebulon Mayor Bobby Blalock, Meansville Mayor Gayle Burden, County Commission Chairman Briar Johnson, Tim Daniel and Terrell Moody of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home, Sons of the American Legion member Jason Patten, Sheriff Jimmy Thomas, and Brenda Turner.
Lt. Christopher Laggis was awarded Peace Officer of the Year. Firefighter Larry Gaddy was presented with the Firefighter of the Year award. Sgt. Bart Brock was awarded Emergency Medical Technician of the Year. Pike Post Legion Family of the Year was awarded to the late Bill Dials and his wife Bonnie. Legionnaire of the Year was awarded to Robert Huckaby.
Pike Post 197 officers for the 2016-2017 year are Commander Bryan Richardson, Senior Vice Commander Wayne German, Junior Vice Commanders Stefan Huckaby and Steven Yerkes, Adjutant Bill Payton Sr., Finance Officer William B. Walker, Chaplain Paul Harris, Service Officer Jim Totten, Historian Peggi Payton, Judge Advocate Billy Payton Sr. and Sergeant at Arms Robert Huckaby.
Melissa Patten was recognized for continuous membership over the past 6 years. American Legion Department of Georgia Commander Carmen Streit-Smith and Kathy Richardson were honored with Certificates of Appreciation. And Brenda Turner and her Mother Margaret Rawlins were presented with two honorary yearly memberships for providing a place for Pike Post 197 to hold their meetings.
Legion Auxiliary members for the 2016-2017 year are President Peggi Payton, First Vice President Tamra Granger, Second Vice President Melissa Patten, Secretary and Chaplain Barbara Jeffreys, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms Sandra Germain and Junior Sergeant at Arms Willa Payton.
