Summer Reading Finale at the J. Joel Edwards Library - Saturday, July 28th

ZEBULON - The J. Joel Edwards held its annual summer reading finale on Saturday, July 28. Besides the indoor crafts, tattoos, and door prizes, the library’s parking lot offered welcome relief from the heat with watermelon (donated by Food Depot and King’s Farmers Market), popsicles, and Pike County’s first-ever foam party, generously sponsored by United Bank.

Almost 350 children tracked their reading time throughout the summer, producing a combined total of over 4,800 hours! The library provided 24 programs for children through age 12, as well as 13 family programs held in the evening or weekend. Our teen program boasted 49 participants this year.

As a tribute to the summer theme, Libraries Rock, the children’s programs included music-themed presentations from magician David Floyd, flamenco guitarist Gladius, professional storyteller Anthony Vincent, Camelot Theatre, drumming instructor Arvin Scott, and local music teacher Stacy Brown.

Family programs, provided on Thursday evenings, kicked off with comedian/ventriloquist Gene Cordova, followed by musical presentations from the Ambassador of Southern Rock Michael Buffalo Smith, and the Appalachian Traveler’s Bluegrass Band. The library also offered two karaoke nights; participants of all ages belted out their favorites from “Let It Go” to “Marie Laveau.”

“None of this would have been possible without the supportive efforts of a caring community,” says library manager, Rosemary Bunn. “Our local sponsors came through in a most impressive way this year, providing not only for the finale but also for the weekly prizes for teens and adults given away inside the library throughout the summer.”

The library would like to offer its gratitude to the following sponsors: AirFi, A Novel Experience, Brian’s Buffet, Buffington Cabinets, Camelot Theatre, Chick-fil-A, Cindy’s Florist, City Pharmacy, Concord Café, Cornerstone Communications, Dairy Queen of Zebulon, Tim Eagle, Food Depot of Griffin, Friends of the J. Joel Edwards Public Library, Game Castle, Hey Jo Boutique, Impact Office Interiors, King’s Farmers Market, Kiwanis of Pike County, Mina’s’s Hallmark, Party Store, Payless Shoesource, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Southern Rivers Energy, Storyteller’s Antiques, Subway of Zebulon, Town & Country Flower Shop, United Bank of Zebulon, and Waffle House.
