Pike County to Enforce No Thru Trucks on Marked Roads

ZEBULON - The Pike County Board of Commissioners has asked teamed up with local business owners to reduce wear and tear on Pike County's No Thru Truck roads. The Pike County Sheriff's office is also part of this team since deputies will be enforcing the No Thru Truck ordinance that has been in place for the past nine years.

In a letter that went out to all local business owners with large trucks, County Manager John Hanson asked business owners to "help to make the dollars we allocate to these issues produce the best possible result." This includes budgeting for major projects like resurfacing and repairs to current infrastructure and ensuring that these upgrades will last as long as possible.

The No Thru Truck ordinance restricts "any and all commercial motor vehicles including tractor-trailers" that do not have "a point of destination, service, pick-up or delivery at a location either directly assessable by use of, said County maintained road(s)" from using county roads that are marked as No Thru Truck routes. Hanson advised that the letter did not insinuate that any local business owners were in violation of the ordinance but that it was being sent to make business owners aware of new efforts for longevity with the Pike County road system.

Pike County's No Thru Trucks Ordinance reads as follows:

§ 70.01 THRU TRUCKS
No “thru” trucks shall be allowed to use any County maintained road in Pike County, Georgia, except as may be otherwise authorized by law, that do/does not have a point of destination, service, pick-up or delivery at a location either directly assessable by use of, said County maintained road(s). For the purpose of this section, the term “thru trucks” shall be defined as every motor vehicle designated, used or maintained primarily for the transportation of property as defined by O.C.G.A. 4-1-1. For the purposes of this section “thru truck” shall include, but will not be limited to, any and all commercial motor vehicles including tractor-trailers. For the purpose of this section, however, the term “thru truck” shall not include non-commercial motor vehicles, including, but not limited to, pick-up trucks. (Res. passed 5-13-98)(Amend. Ord. Passed 01-24-05)
