National Day of Prayer Held in Zebulon

ZEBULON - For the past 14 years, there has been a National Day of Prayer Celebration on the Courthouse Square in Zebulon. Ben Maxedon has coordinated these efforts since the beginning and works through Prayer Power of Georgia, Inc. to bring two services before the community on the first Thursday in May of every year.

The 62nd National Day of Prayer was held in Zebulon on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Pike County Courthouse. The Pike County Middle School Chorus provided the music at the noon event with Rev. Kevin Murdock from Zebulon First Baptist Church, Rev. Chris Teasley from Concord Baptist Church, and Chaplain Ben Maxedon offering words and prayer.

There were many community leaders present at this event including Sheriff Thomas, Sheriff White from Lamar County, Commissioners Jarrett, Bass, and Powers, Tax Commissioner Wynn, Mayor Beres, and State Representative Johnnie Caldwell, Jr. as well as more than 100 people from our community who came out to exercise our freedom to pray for our community, state, and nation.

Bill Stembridge brought words from Senator Saxby Chambliss as he has for the past several years. "It is by God's grace that we are able to gather in the most free and secure country in the world, and today we ask Him to continue to guide us and give us the strength and wisdom to make the right decisions," he read. "We ask His special blessing upon those men and women who wear the uniform of the United States and who defend our liberties and freedoms and their families."

Those present at this event heard the story of Daniel and how he was persecuted because he prayed in the midst of adversity. We were encouraged to be the people to make our nation a godly nation and to pray for all of our politicians--whether we like them or not. We also prayed for our local, state and national governments and those leaders as well as our schools and our military and their families. There was a solemn reminder in Chaplain Maxedon's final prayer that prayers are the strongest weapon in our arsenal to fight evil and find God's purpose in our lives.

The evening service was held at 6:45 p.m. at Pike County Middle School with Guest Speaker, Chaplain Kenneth Koon, US Army. And music was provided by Turning Point.

The National Day of Prayer is a patriotic and spiritual celebration of our great nation. It is a time to join together to honor those who have served in many different capacities and to ask blessings for those who are serving our community and nation as they are called. The next annual National Day of Prayer will be held on the first Thursday in May in 2014. Thanks to all who gave their time to participate in these two services. God bless Pike County, the state of Georgia, and our nation.
