Pike County Honors Those Touched by Cancer in the Annual Relay for Life
By Editor Becky Watts

ZEBULON - The Relay For Life of Pike County was held on Friday, May 16th through May 17, 2014 at the Pike County High School track. The event kicked off at 5 p.m. with the Southern Cruisers Car show with the opening ceremony will begin about 6:30 p.m. with inspirational words from Travis Ferguson.

There was a Survivor Lap, a Caregiver Lap, and a Team Banner Lap around the track. The smiles on the faces of the cancer survivors were truly priceless and onlookers hollered and clapped for them.

Events went throughout the night and into the dawn with performances from several bands, the Womanless Beauty Contest, the Luminaria Ceremony, a talent show and karaoke contest, and many events and laps to participate in until the 6 a.m. close of the event.

The event raised more than $40,000 with 19 teams and 160 participants, but that has not been the emphasis of the Relay for Life. Event Chair Michael Cox wants everyone to understand that "participating in the Relay for Life pays tribute, recognizes, and honors those touched by cancer." He has a personal goal to have all of Pike County's citizens to participate in the Relay for Life in some manner.

Do you know someone who is fighting against cancer? Do you know someone who has lost a battle to cancer? Would you like to see a cure for this horrible disease that has touched so many of our loved ones?

The Relay for Life is over for this year, but you have an opportunity to be a part of the festivities and fundraising next year. Put together a team. Contribute to a Womanless Beauty Pageant contestant. Support the survivors with your voice and your handclapping as they walk around the track. Walk some laps. Buy some food and play some games. Buy a luminaria. Volunteer to help put together another outstanding program next year.

There are a million ways to be a part of our Relay for Life. Look for it next May.
