Pike County Remembers Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice
By Editor Becky Watts

ZEBULON - Pike County American Legion Post 197 presented the annual Memorial Day ceremony on the square at the Pike County Courthouse again this year. Over 90 people came out to this day of remembrance and to honor those who gave their all in the service of our country.

Commander Bill Payton, Sr. gave the history of the Korean War and Adjutant Jim Totten told about service in the Korean War. The extreme heat and extreme cold were at the top of the list of things that are remembered by those who fought in this war. It was said that those who paid the ultimate sacrifice would not want our pity, but they would want us to remember their loved ones who have been left behind. Remembering the sacrifice that has been paid ensures that they did not die in vain. Because of them, our nation lives.

Korean War veterans were asked to stand and were honored in a round of applause for their service to our country. Veterans who have passed during the year were named one by one by Jr. Vice Stefan Huckaby. After each name was called, Chaplain Ben Maxedon rang a bell one time. The sound of the traffic going by the square was the only thing that was heard in the background as TAPS was played in memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The flags were raised at the end of the ceremony and a memorial wreath was placed at the Veterans' Monument on the square.
