ZEBULON - The Pike County Board of Education today announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year for Maintenance and Operations by 1.55 percent over the rollback millage rate. Therefore, before the Board of Education may set a final millage rate, Georgia Law requires that three public hearings be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on this increase.
The tentative Maintenance and Operations millage rate will collect funds to make up for 1.51% decrease in the total value of our local property tax digest. The actual dollars collected by the tentative millage rate will generate the same amount of school taxes levied in the previous fiscal year. Further, the five year history of tax levy for school operations demonstrates amounts collected for schools is at an historically low level and is in fact less than the average amount collected in the previous five fiscal years.
There is good news, however, as the tentative Bond millage rate will decrease by 8.18 percent. This decrease in the Bond millage rate reduces the effect of the Maintenance and Operation increase by 41%. In real dollars on a $150,000 property, the net taxes collected would increase $8.16.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Pike County Schools Board Room, 7450 Hwy 19 South, Zebulon, Georgia on August 5, 2014 at 6:00 PM, on August 6, 2014 at 11:45 AM and on August 14, 2011, at 6:00 PM.
