Sheriffs' Office Gives Report on Snow and Ice Storm Activity

ZEBULON - Sheriff Jimmy Thomas makes the following press release: Over the past few days during the winter storm event various officials of Pike County Government worked diligently together to ensure the safety of citizens of our county. Road conditions worsened rapidly as the snow and ice accumulated on the roadways, however local officials were able maintain services to the entire county. A total of sixty eight calls for service were fielded by 911 operators. This included seven motor vehicle accidents attributed to the poor driving conditions.

No incidents of power lines coming down have been noted as of this press release.

Emergency services and road department personnel kept a round the clock watch for trouble spots on the roads that needed to be addressed and to assist any citizens that needed help while travelling. The County Manager, Public Works Department and Pike County Emergency Services worked tirelessly to ensure that citizens had the necessary resources should any potential problems arise.

Citizens heeded the warnings to stay off of the roads during the dangerous conditions which helped immensely in allowing officials to be more proactive in their response to the winter storm. Although the hazardous road conditions existed in Pike County as it did other counties, the decision by most Pike citizens to stay off of the roads assisted greatly in mitigating the problems seen in other counties. Several citizens also offered any assistance they could give to emergency personnel should it be needed. A special thank you to all of the employees of Pike County for their professional actions and the long hours that were put in by all personnel.

Pike County was hit by an ice and snow storm on January 28, 2014. The snow man on the hood of a vehicle was sent by Anita Neath from Griffin before the snow even began in Zebulon on the 28th. The trampoline and small house picture was contributed by Malissa Evans from Williamson on the afternoon of the 28th. Heather Holliday contributed the picture of Hwy 109 East on the morning of January 29th.

The Pike County Sheriff's Office put out a press release that told how bad the roads and secondary roads are in Pike County on the evening of the 28th. This wreck shows how bad the roads were. There were no injuries in this Molena wreck. Thank you to David Russell for submitting these photos.

We had ice until almost dark and then Pike County Times took a break to play in the snow too! You can pack a bucket full of snow and make a big snowman like we did. My son was the brains behind this creation because I would never have even thought of it!

These four photos were taken on Wednesday afternoon as the ice was beginning to melt.
