Incident at Valero Results in DUI Arrest
By Editor Becky Watts

ZEBULON - Law enforcement and first responders were called out to the Valero gas station north of Zebulon at 8:08 p.m. on August 27, 2024 in response to an unconscious male lying face down in the parking lot. An hour later, one underage male had been transported for treatment and another was transported to the Pike County Jail.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office, The Zebulon Police Department (ZPD), and the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) responded to this call as well as EMS and members of the Pike County Fire Department.

Pike County Times has very little information on either of the subjects of this police report. The incident report has been redacted of names and identifying information since those involved are under the age of 18.

The Incident

According to the incident report, Pike County Deputies made contact with the driver of the Kia Optima when they arrived. They reported that the young male became physically resistant and began to fight with law enforcement when they made contact with him. This prompted them to place him in handcuffs and secure him in the back seat of a patrol vehicle.

A witness approached a Deputy on the scene and advised that the driver of the vehicle tried to flee in the vehicle when he was told that law enforcement was on the way. The report states that citizens stopped the driver from leaving and that angered him.

Another witness who had left the scene after law enforcement arrived but followed up with law enforcement after the incident, stated that the driver got into the vehicle, began to try to back to back up, and almost ran over the male lying on the ground.

The investigating officer from ZPD attempted to speak to the driver of the vehicle who was in the back of a patrol car, but the male was uncooperative as he yelled at the ZPD officer and tried to get out of the patrol car.

During this time, the male patient was checked out by EMS and Fire on the scene before being transported by ambulance to Spalding Wellstar Hospital for treatment.

GSP arrived on the scene and asked if the ZPD officer could smell if an alcoholic beverage was coming from the male’s breath in the back of the patrol car. The answer was yes so GSP read the implied consent and took over this aspect of the case.

The incident report states that troopers from GSP found an open Michelob Ultra which was half full and cold to the touch sitting behind the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The male in the back of the patrol car was then transported to the Pike County Jail because he was kicking the windows and the divider in the patrol car.

The owner of the vehicle was contacted to pick up the car that was released after the driver was taken to jail.

Closing

The ZPD officer checked on the patient at Spalding Wellstar after the driver of the car was taken to jail. The patient was awake and talking at that time and advised that the last thing he remembered was hanging out with everyone under the bridge at Shoal Creek drinking Crown liquor. He stated that both he and his friend had been drinking all day.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a citation for Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Disorderly Conduct, Reckless Driving, and Open Container.
