Pike Post 197 American Legion Asks Help from the Public to Update the Veterans Memorial

ZEBULON - The Pike County Veterans Memorial on the Courthouse Square in Zebulon is a historic landmark that honors those from Pike County who have defended our nation’s freedom and gave the ultimate sacrifice with their service. American Legion Pike Post 197 has begun the refurbishment of this memorial. The community has an opportunity to help with this project.

Pike Post 197 manages and maintains the Veteran’s Memorial and Pike County’s official flags on the southwest corner of the square across from 1828 Coffee and FishTales Bar and Grill. Over the years, the community has seen updates to this Memorial as the base has been strengthened to withstand the increased traffic on the square where state highways 18 and 19 meet. More renovation has begun.

The granite stone has been replaced with concrete slab, the magnolia tree has been trimmed, the privet hedge has been removed. This was completed at the cost of $7,250 which was funded by generous donors. This includes a donation of $2,500 from Southern Rivers Energy.

Further updates include placing a 4 foot high granite wall that will match the granite monument along with the placement of dedication plaques and decorative granite enhancements for a total of about $16,500.

The first three plaques that will be mounted on the new granite wall will be the original dedication of the Memorial's erection in 1949, the refurbishment rededication in 2012, and the second rededication scheduled for this coming Memorial Day 2026.

Major donors will be listed on the rededication plaque for this project. A donation of $1,000 or more will have the donor’s name honored on the plaque.

Donations of any amount will be welcomed by Pike County American Legion Post 197.

Please contact Commander/Project Director Bryan D. Richardson at 678-764-2611 if you would like to be a part of this historical project.
