Pike Fire Department Responds to Woods Fire in Molena

MOLENA - A call went out on Tuesday afternoon for a woods fire with structures in danger. The Pike County Fire Department responded to Highway 109 at Deer Trail.

Georgia Forestry provided mutual aid by plowing a break around the fire that was deep in the woods. Five to six acres were burned by the time that the fire was contained in this mountainous area. The origin of the fire is not known though it was reported that someone was burning debris around the time of the fire. The Pike County Fire Department put out the hot spots that could be reached and the rest of the fire was allowed to burn itself out inside of the fire break.

Public Information Officer Anita Neath advised that there are areas that will be burning for awhile but the fire is contained within the break. She described the terrain as rolling, thick woods with areas that were inaccessible to fire equipment.

The fire rekindled on Wednesday morning around 9 a.m. and was checked by personnel from the Pike County Fire Department, but Pike County Times was advised that the fire remained within the fire break plowed by Georgia Forestry.
