MEANSVILLE - Sometime shortly before 1:22 p.m. today, Rachel Dunn of Pine Valley Road was traveling west on Vega Road when she lost control of her Ford Taurus. Major David Neal of the Pike County Sheriff's Office advised that she entered a curve, overcompensated and left the roadway. Her car came to rest against a tree at the bottom of a twenty foot embankment.
Lt. Laggis from the Pike County Sheriff's Office came through this area within minutes of the accident and stopped to find out why a front bumper was laying in the roadway. At the same time, a neighbor was looking out of the window to find the source of the wreck and saw the deputy was already present on the scene. The deputy looked down the embankment and called for emergency personnel to help with the accident.
Pike County Emergency Services arrived on the scene to extricate Ms. Dunn from the vehicle. Chief Randy Snyder said that there was heavy damage to the vehicle and that there was a risk of fire because the battery was damaged. “We always prepare for that with standing by with a (fire) truck,” he said.
One crew of volunteer fire fighters prepared for the life flight helicopter and the other worked to cut Ms. Dunn from the vehicle. She was taken up the embankment in a Stokes Basket which is a metal stretcher/basket designed to accommodate an injured person during search and rescue operations in areas where a simple backboard is not feasible.
Deputy Ray directed traffic which, looking at the picture above, stretched back quite a ways at times during the rescue operation. Ms. Dunn was brought up the embankment and placed in the waiting Mid Georgia Ambulance which carried her to Vega Community Church where the Emory Flight (life flight) helicopter was waiting to transport her to Macon for treatment. “Everything went really smooth,” said Chief Randy Snyder.
