City of Zebulon Will Begin SPLOST Project In Early April

ZEBULON - The City of Zebulon is excited to announce the start date of a much-anticipated project that will demolish and replace the existing sidewalks on Highway 18/Barnesville Street. The project is scheduled to begin on Monday April 3, 2023.

The funding for this project will come from 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and GDOT Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) sources. The City has selected Hasbun Construction to complete the project for a sum of $282,714.91.

Based out of Alpharetta, Hasbun Construction “guarantees precise, timely, and efficient work.” The City Administrator along with Mayor Walter are confident that Hasbun Construction will do an excellent job on this project. There are several residents along Barnesville Street who are mobility-impaired and have not been able to use the sidewalks due to their poor condition. This project should greatly improve the usability of the Barnesville Street sidewalks.

The project will include portions of the sidewalk on both, the North and South sides of the street. Construction on the north side of the street will begin at the old train depot (Depot Street) and continue east until the end of the current sidewalk. The south side will begin at the square and continue until the end of the existing sidewalk as well. New sidewalks will also be poured on Wrightsburg Way to safely connect pedestrians to Highway 18/Barnesville St.

The current sidewalks will be replaced with new 5-foot-wide walkways. The replacement of the existing sidewalks will ultimately create a more ADA accessible community for the citizens of Zebulon that reside in that neighborhood. In addition to the sidewalks, driveways adjacent to Barnesville Street will also be remedied.

Hasbun Construction will be working efficiently to minimize any prolonged delays, however, some intermittent traffic setbacks should be expected. This project is estimated to last three months.

As construction in this area continues, the City of Zebulon urges residents to drive with caution and be courteous to the crews working on the project. Carter and Sloope Engineers out of Macon, Georgia provided the design, permitting and bid management for the project and will continue to monitor the construction together with City personnel.

The City of Zebulon is committed to improving walkability in the community. We will continue to plan and construct sidewalks and walkways for residents and shoppers to walk safely in the City.

Please contact Zebulon City Hall at 770-567-8748 with any further questions or concerns.
