Watching Mark Muir and the Georgia Irish Disc Dogs perform and listening to the encouraging words of a survivor were memorable parts of the evening.

Pike County held its annual Relay for Life on May 20, 2011. The theme was “Driving Away Cancer”. From the Survivor's Lap where those standing on the sidelines cheered for survivors of cancer to the remembrance of those fighting cancer and who had lost the fight to this horrible disease and all of the events in between, this was a night to remember.

Relay for Life Survivor Dinner a Success
By Renee Andrews

The Farm Bureau of Pike County recently hosted The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Survivor Dinner at Christ Chapel Community Church. Forty-one cancer survivors attended the dinner along with their caregivers. “The dinner celebrates the individuals in our community who have survived cancer and remembers those who are no longer with us,” stated Angel Stowers, chairperson for Relay for Life of Pike County. “It is a wonder opportunity to celebrate the hope the American Cancer Society’s efforts bring to those affected by cancer.”

A delicious steak dinner was enjoyed by the participants along with an informative story presented by survivor, David Bell. “Everyone hears about breast cancer and prostate cancer, but the #1 cancer that kills is actually skin cancer,” shared Mr. Bell. “It is also one of the cancers that will most likely reoccur. I am a skin cancer survivor but I know it is something I will battle for the rest of my life. My advice to you is to make sure you always use sunscreen, wear a hat, and even wear long sleeves to minimize your exposure.” Mr. Bell went on to say he looked forward to the dinner each year to see the faces of those who would celebrate another birthday and to honor those who were no longer with us.

“The Pike County Farm Bureau would like to say thank you to York’s Meat Plant for the discount on the steaks for the dinner and to Cindy’s Florist for providing lovely flowers for each of our tables,” commented Rebecca Rolling, coordinator for the event. “It is such a blessing to be part of something that celebrates life. We are honored to be a part of this each year. I would also like to express our appreciation to all of the volunteers who take part in making this a great dinner and a wonderful time of fellowship.”
