Happy Mother's Day!
By Guest Columnist Deborah Dennis

Psalm 127:3 - "Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward for him."

In case you've forgotten (if you have, you're obviously not a mom), Mother's Day is this month. Last week, I saw a plaque that said, "Motherhood - the hardest job you'll ever love." Out of all the quotes that I have seen lately about moms, that one seems to sum it up, for me anyway.

Mothers everywhere are constantly reminded that we are shaping the lives, the blessings, that God gives us. I know as the proud mom of three sons, I definitely consider them to be a blessing from God, especially since I was told at a very young age by doctors that the chances of me having children were slim to none. God is good. Yet, with every child God gave me, as I shaped and sculpted their lives, I learned a few things myself.

The biggest lesson that I learned with my first son Gregory, was to be more outspoken about what I believed in. I'll never forget being 18 years old, looking at the infant that was just handed to me in the hospital, and praying, "God, I can't even stand up for myself. How am I going to stand up for him? Lord, please help me!" Always faithful, God did just that. As a teenage mom, we ate a lot of McDonald's and kept the road hot, but we somehow made it.

I was 25 years old when I had my second son, Devin. A bundle of energy from the start, he taught me not to sweat the small stuff, and to pick my battles. I used to tell him that he didn't have a guardian angel, he had a crew. When one got tired, they would take shifts, or call in reinforcements. To this day, just when I think he has pushed my patience to the limit, Devin will do something to make me laugh.

And then there's Owen. God gave him to me when I was 32 years old. I was a "seasoned" mother, or so I thought. Owen has taught me that I'm never too old to learn. After all, gummies should be it's own food group, swinging should be an Olympic event, and a simple piece of string can provide hours of enjoyment. Not only has he taught me to think outside of the box, but sometimes you just need to throw the thing away.

When I think about my sons, I realize that all three are not only on different paths, but in different places. I love my boys with all my heart, and I thank God that "the steps of a righteous man are ordered by God." I know that as a mother, I haven't done everything right. But I made up my mind a long time ago, that as long as my boys can say, " Momma may not have been perfect, and sometimes she acted downright crazy, but I KNOW that she loves me, " then I will be satisfied with the job I've done.

To all mothers everywhere, Happy Mother's Day!
